- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup heavy cream (for frosting)
- 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
- Chocolate shavings or sprinkles (for decoration)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
- Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth (the batter will be thin).
- Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
- For the frosting, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, continuing to whip until stiff peaks form.
- Once the cakes are cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of whipped frosting on top.
- Add the second layer and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining whipped frosting.
- Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles as desired.

Notes
- For added flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of espresso powder to the batter.
- Make sure all your ingredients are at room temperature for the best results.
