Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- Once the cakes are cool, level the tops if necessary. Place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread a layer of buttercream frosting on top, and then place the second layer on top.
- Frost the top and sides of the cake with buttercream frosting. Use food coloring to create fun designs, such as stripes or polka dots, to match the graduation theme.
- Add graduation-themed cake toppers to finish the decoration.
